Single Eye

"...I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works."

"reins" Now that is an odd word for it means = a kidney.

I understand the functions of our kidney and like to look at it as our mind.

Our mind filter out the debris and filth in our lives, and as the kidney our mind will regulate and control whose life will be lived in our souls - God's or our own.

Lets look at the Greek word "Mind"

Mind - Nous (#3563) = the intellect, the mind in thought, feeling or will; the understanding.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, G3563 that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

For who hath known the mind G3563 of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind G3563 of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:16

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; .... Ephesians 4:23

For me that is not enough to draw a strong study from so I like to dig deeper and explore the word ‘mind’ in the Hebrew (OT).

In the Hebrew (OT), the word ‘mind’ was translated from three Hebrew words: spirit, reins, and kidneys.

I have listed “spirit” first for me it is a word that is used a lot without its proper meaning. The word “spirit" when used in scripture describes our “mind.” Our mind/spirit is the  seat of our will, what comes in the mind and studied becomes the life source the or the power source of our being (body). Our mind/spirit resides at the core of our being and it is what creates the thoughts of our hearts and produces them as actions in our lives.

Some say you are what you eat, I say the same with the mind …. you are what tree you feed from!

But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job 32:8

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:17

The source of life for the born again believer is the “Word of life.”

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 1 John 1:1-4

Them not born again of ‘water’ and ‘Spirit’ are they that serve the darkness that exists within their minds.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. Ephesians 4:17-19

Our mind initiate an idea in our heart (life), which is seen or acted out in our souls.

The "renewing our minds" will allow God's Life to show forth, and not our own.

"Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed (how?) by the renewing of your mind, so that ye may prove what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. Luke 11:34-35

The eye I feel stands for “sight” or "mental vision"

So to see one needs light and that light is the Word of Life and our mind is how we see. Once the light of the Word of life enters our eyes it is seen in the “spirit of our mind.”

God is Spirit and as so His Word is Spirit also and flesh and blood will never understand the Word unless that flesh and blood is born again of ‘water’ and ‘Spirit.’

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: …. Ephesians 3:8,9

Unbeliever’s Mind

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Corinthians 2:14

So we see the "Unbeliever" "...cannot understand [or know] the things of God...." Therefore, they really cannot know true love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, or any of the fruit of the Spirit, because they don’t not have the “Word of life” operating within them to produce these through them.

Yes some or many will say they have received the gift of the Holy Ghost, but what they miss is Truth is not a gift it is the very Word of life transforming them into His image.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. Philippians 2:12-16

Believer’s Mind

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:1,2

The believer’s mind will no longer be self centered but God centered for the Word of life will transform them. For the Word of life will become the believer’s life (heart), which will then produce God centered life actions in their soul.

The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. Matthew 6:22

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Luke 11:34

Do we see how a single eye (understanding) causes the whole body to be full of light?

This will be for that body will have one desire, one way and most of all one will. His!

We can say this be single-mindedness or one soul. For the Word of life preceding from this person's heart is freely coming forth and producing fruit of the Spirit and this is what it means to “…walk in the light, as he is in the light, and we will have fellowship one with another (1 John 1:7)”

I see now or shall I say I understand now this verse in a greater way ----> “… and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost,” Act 6:5

Here we see the qualification of the seven men … “seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, ..…” Act 6:3

No doubt they were obeying the Word of life rather than the old man.

Double Minded

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:…”Proverbs 23:7

One has either the tree of the knowledge of good and evil to eat from or he has the tree of life to live from.

The double minded believer is no longer seeking Him but rather they seeks the needs of self.

This is a believer who has encountered God's Love, His Thoughts and His Power in their heart (life), but because they have chosen to follow their own lusts, hurts, frustration, anger, guilt, etc., God's thoughts are blocked from coming forth, and thus self-centered life actions (another life) are produced.

James wrote that "a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways" will not receive anything from the Lord. Such a man flip-flops "like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind." (James 1:6-8)

They profess that they know God (intimately); but in works (actions) they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Titus 1:16

Instead of His actions they chose their own self centered actions and begin to live the lie.

No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. 2 Timothy 2:4

Jesus said "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." (Matthew 6:24)

Now we may just want to look at ‘mammon’ as riches or wealth, but what it comes down to is one seeking personal selfish gain by not seeking Him who has eternal life.

As His children and His body we are to “let your conversation (manner of life) be as it becometh the gospel of Christ …” Philippians 1:27 For in His body is singleness of mind seen in unity and oneness in purpose, love. For singleness of mind is displayed in humility, and in genuine concern for others, for we are "bondservants of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:1)

"Let nothing be done through self ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3,4)

That is the mind of Christ, one who walks in the light as He is in the light!
